Mat Frank takes on Freed From Desire, reshaping one of the most widely recognised records of the last three decades into a more forceful, club-focused track.
First released by Gala in 1996, the original has moved far beyond its chart success, becoming a constant across clubs, festivals and terraces worldwide. Its vocal carries an instant reaction, which leaves little room for half measures when revisiting it.
Mat Frank approaches it head-on. The vocal remains central, but everything around it is reworked for impact. A weightier low-end, tighter percussion and a more driving rhythm section give the track a harder edge, pushing it into peak-time territory.
Born Mathew Frankland, Mat Frank developed his sound while growing up in Bridgetown, starting out as a DJ in his teens before moving into production at 18. Early sets at parties, school events and private bookings ran alongside long sessions refining his approach at home, all while working full-time in construction. That balance continues to shape his output, with a sound that pulls from house, techno and broader electronic influences, built around energy and control.
This version of ‘Freed From Desire’ captures that direction clearly. It keeps the recognizable core intact while pushing the track into a tougher, more focused space.
